South Africans are, for the most part, a happy and welcoming people. We’re known for being friendly, always smiling and laughing, and making others feel at home. Whether it’s the cashier starting a conversation, a neighbor helping you with something, or people offering unsolicited advice based on what they overhear, there’s a sense of camaraderie. We make it a point to learn each other’s names and never forget to say "please" and "thank you." In many ways, it’s like living in an endless, exciting commercial, reminiscent of those classic Wimpy ads – this is how I remember it, anyway.

Lately, there has been a growing number of videos circulating online showcasing South Africa as an exceptional travel destination. Many of these TikTok videos highlight the kindness and positivity of South Africans, which helps explain why South Africa remains one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

I’ve often wondered what makes South Africa so unique. To be honest, I didn’t fully appreciate it while I was living there. Of course, South Africa has a rich and complex history, but the country has come a long way. I often wonder why it is not the same everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, you get pleasant people everywhere, but it does not feel the same. There is no feeling that we all in this together.

For those who know me personally, you’ll understand that I’m highly analytical. I tend to think through things deeply, and this particular thought has been on my mind for some time now.

As we move into March, the days are getting longer, and in the Netherlands, the temperature has reached a pleasant 19 degrees Celsius. I’ve noticed smiles, laughter, and conversations everywhere. It then hit me, like a ton of bricks: the sun impacts us more than we realize. Just like that, I had an epiphany. South Africans may not have the wealth of other nations, but we always have the sun shining on us literally.

It can't be a coincidence that the mood of an entire nation can be influenced by something as simple as sunlight. Perhaps it’s the warmth of the sun, that gives us the energy and joy that others often notice. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the smallest things – like a sunny day – can have the most profound effects on our outlook and the way we interact with the world.

Let this be your reminder that not even the sunlight should be taken for granted!

Until next time. ♥️
